In the post-war period, continuity persisted alongside new beginnings. Public services were a priority, from education and health to housing. Living standards rose and leisure activities expanded rapidly. New arrivals brought fresh influences, reflecting the multiculturalism of today. Challenges came with de-industrialisation, rapid technology change and the fight for equality.
