Opportunities

We are currently looking for volunteers to fill key roles in helping the LAHS to continue championing the archaeology, history and heritage of Leicestershire and Rutland, and in making it enjoyable and accessible for all. Volunteers are required for the following roles:

Membership Secretary

The Membership Secretary is the main contact between LAHS and the members of the Society. They enrol members and renew memberships, manage membership records, send out announcements and mailings to members via email and post, and answer general queries. Membership is managed using Access databases and via the LAHS website. Training in the use of the website will be given.

Lecture Secretary

The lecture secretary organises the monthly lectures, from initial contact with prospective speakers, to promotion of the talks and organisation at the time of the event. This involves liaising with the venue where the lecture is being held, organising the annual lecture programme, liaising with speakers over logistics, and working with the newsletter editor and social media officers, to promote the event. Some technical ability would be useful to help speakers load up their presentations onto the lectern laptop, and some understanding of cloud recording would be helpful. However, full training will given for all aspects of the role.

Editor, Leicestershire Historian

The Editor is responsible for the overall content and quality of the Leicestershire Historian (hereafter the Historian) and for overseeing the complete process of production, from submission of articles to final publication. The Editor selects reviewers required in developing content for the Historian. The Editor also works with the Book Reviews’ Editor on the final copy; with the printer to agree a timeline for publication; and on all the stages of preparation of the Historian.

These roles are open to LAHS members, who will also become members of its committee on taking them up. The committee meets five times a year, and you will be supported and assisted by committee members as part of the LAHS team. Please consider taking on one of the roles – by yourself or together with someone else. It you think you might be interested, please contact Elizabeth Tingle at Elizabeth.tingle@dmu.ac.uk for more details. A detailed role description is available, and Elizabeth and Jim Butler, LAHS Hon Secretary, will be very happy to talk about what the roles involve.
