Nanpantan: Leicestershire’s forgotten holiday destination

Dr Pam Fisher, Leicestershire Victorian County History Trust

In 1883, there were fewer than 25 buildings clustered around Nanpantan crossroads, three miles south-west of Loughborough town centre. Yet police Superintendent Peberdy told magistrates that on a single day in August that year he had seen ‘about a thousand people sitting on the roadside’ there. Where were they from, and what did they find to do? This talk will look at excursions and day trips to Nanpantan from the 1820s to the 1930s and consider the justification for a claim that Nanpantan was ‘the holiday resort of the people.’
