LAHS field visit: Mountsorrel Castle

Sunday 29 November 2026, 11am. Meet at the Buttercross at Mountsorrel.

Mountsorrel Castle is an impressive earthwork monument that overlooks the River Soar and the main (former A6) road from Leicester south to London and north to Carlisle. It was constructed c.1080 and was demolished in the reign of Henry III around 1217. Mathew Morris, an authority on Leicestershire’s castles, will take us on a guided walk around the site, to discuss its history and archaeology. We will commence at the Buttercross/centre of Mountsorrel, walk up to the castle, then down again to finish. The walk will last around 1 hour 30 minutes. There is some rough and uneven ground at the castle site.

Cost: the visit is for members and is free of charge.

Bus: The 127 bus travels between Leicester St Margaret’s bus station and Loughborough on Sundays. It stops in Mountsorrel.

Car Parking: There is a car park on Little Lane as well as street parking around the Green.
